Maintenance of Certification

The American Board of Medical Specialties, the parent of all of the “boards”, is implementing a new process to verify continuing development of competence among physician specialists. In short, the board is going to require surgeons to gather information in a continuous and ongoing fashion that includes patient case logs; evaluations from colleagues, peers, and associates; evaluations from patients, nurses, administrators; documentation of specific training (ACLS or ATLS, for example); documentation of relevant CME activity within the specific field of specialization; and documentation of passing the recertification examination. So it will be more than just passing the exam. It will be a defined set of materials, gathered over many years, documenting that the surgeon has been continually involved in a program of lifelong learning and that the surgeon can function effectively and professionally within the healthcare environment.

Introduced a system that would eliminate nonproductive time for healthcare professionals by streamlining the information lifecycle required in generating reports used for board recertification & re-licensure. Designed prototype tools and processes to be used by individual surgeons to gather information in an organized, searchable, and retrievable manner in meeting the requirements for the Maintenance of Certification.

The platform has several purposes. First, it is a physical reminder of the process itself. Second, it is organized so that surgeons can be aware and keep track of what they need to be doing when. Third, it will easily capture and store documents using “drag and drop” and making a safe copy at a remote but secure server. Fourth, it will generate the reports needed for the application process for when the time finally comes to apply.
